A lot of modern influence does not arrive wearing a uniform. It arrives as a post from someone with a ring light, a monetized persona, a claim of independence, and a contract saying the content must appear genuine. The public is then expected to mistake choreography for consensus.

Thanks for reading! Not just who said what, but who paid, who coordinated, who buried the receipt, what language cleaned it up, and which part of the system benefited from the confusion. Sometimes that will mean whistleblower stories. Sometimes it will mean PR containment. Sometimes it will mean political operatives using the influencer economy like a ghost kitchen for ideology. The point is not generic corruption. The point is the mechanism.

So the first issue starts where a lot of modern propaganda now lives: in the space between “authentic content” and paid political messaging.

The href="https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/elon-musks-ex-describes-exact-171127294.html">Former MAGA influencer Ashley St. Clair recently described what she says is a pay-to-play ecosystem for right-wing political messaging, one that runs through Republican consulting firms and private platforms where influencers can browse campaigns, accept assignments, receive scripts, and get paid to post. Compensation, she said, can be per click or a flat fee. The messaging is political, not commercial. Which means the audience often does not get the disclosure label that would make the arrangement legible.

That alone would be enough to matter. But the more revealing part is not the money. It is the design.

This does not sound like a few influencers freelancing for a cause. It sounds like a cleaner, more professional system than that. Firms sit in the middle. A client or donor objective becomes a campaign. The campaign becomes a set of deliverables. The deliverables become posts, petitions, frames, and “organic” language. The audience gets the final product stripped of context, which is exactly how the people building it prefer it.

The post lands in a feed looking like personal conviction. Behind it sits something much closer to vendor management.

That distinction matters because it tells you what kind of machine this is. It is not spontaneous political enthusiasm with money drifting through it. It is political procurement dressed as authenticity.

Content must appear genuine

The phrase doing the most work here is the one that sounds almost too on the nose to be real.

Politico reported in December 2024 that an associate of Ric Grenell contacted conservative influencers with contracts worth up to five figures. One such contract reportedly required posts during “peak posting times,” said the “content must appear genuine,” and barred anything that looked too much like an advertisement. The money was to be routed through a consulting firm, Magnify Media Partners LLC. Grenell denied involvement. The firm owner said the project was never executed. But the contract language is the story either way.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Politico Screenshot—link takes you to Politico story

“Content must appear genuine” is one of those lines that deserves to be sealed in acrylic and displayed in the lobby of every consulting firm in America.

That is the whole trick in seven words.

Not that the content should be genuine. Not that the person posting it should actually believe it. Not that the audience deserves context. Only that it should appear genuine. The assignment is not persuasion through truth. It is persuasion through mimicry. Take the voice people trust, load a purchased message into it, and make sure the seams do not show.

This is not some weird side hustle attached to politics. It is politics adapting itself to creator culture, where intimacy is monetized, sincerity is stylized, and the ad only works if it can pass for a thought.

The consultant as laundering device

The most important character in this system is not the influencer. It is the middleman.

The disclosure problem St. Clair described is structural. If a campaign, PAC, or political operation pays a consulting firm, that transaction may exist somewhere in formal reporting. But once the firm distributes the money onward, the public trail gets thinner. The consultant becomes a wall. The creator becomes a plausible independent voice. The audience gets theater instead of transparency.

That is why this system is so useful.

The consultant does not just handle logistics. The consultant absorbs accountability. They are the conversion layer between hard money and soft influence, between a donor’s objective and a feed full of people apparently arriving at the same conclusion all on their own. The consultant professionalizes message discipline while spreading responsibility across enough intermediaries that no single post looks like what it is: part of a paid distribution strategy.

This is one of the core subjects of Gag Ordered. Not just bad acts, but the legal and procedural furniture that makes bad acts difficult to name in public. Institutions love structures that do the dirty work while preserving a clean face for the people at the top. The consultant class is one of the best devices ever built for that purpose. It turns intention into process, payment into strategy, and coordination into “engagement.”

The group chat is not public opinion

St. Clair also described a coordination layer that will sound familiar to anyone who has watched a suspiciously synchronized wave of certainty form online within minutes of a scandal. According to her, large influencers share group chats with administration officials and Trump-world figures, and messaging is coordinated in real time. Smaller influencers then see the aligned posts and mistake them for consensus. The public sees even further downstream and mistakes them for reality.

This is how a line becomes a mood.

You do not need every participant to be directly paid. You only need a core paid layer, some message discipline, a few high-follower nodes, and enough opportunists willing to repeat what already looks like a winning script. The result is an information cascade with no obvious fingerprints. By the time a normal user encounters it, the message has already passed through enough voices to seem socially verified.

This is one reason internet discourse feels so rotten. It is not just that people disagree. It is that people are increasingly reacting to manufactured atmosphere. Someone funds the first wave. Someone coordinates the timing. Someone writes the language. Everyone else is left arguing with a weather pattern.

The NDA economy of political speech

One of the more revealing claims in the piece is that many of these arrangements are locked behind confidentiality agreements, described as highly asymmetric and written in ways that make it financially dangerous for participants to speak publicly later.

Again, the mechanism matters more than the melodrama.

The point of a strong asymmetrical contract is not only to protect a business interest. In political influence work, it also protects the illusion. It raises the cost of defection. It ensures that the people most able to explain how the machine works are the least able to afford telling the truth about it. You do not need to eliminate dissent if you can simply make candor unaffordable.

That is another core concern of this newsletter. Speech in America is often discussed as though the only real threat comes from formal censorship. It does not. Plenty of speech is constrained through contract design, reputational risk, litigation threat, platform incentives, and economic dependency. It is entirely possible to maintain a culture of nominal free expression while building a market where honesty is professionally reckless.

The gag order, in other words, does not always arrive stamped by a judge. Sometimes it arrives as standard business practice.

The useful defector problem

St. Clair is an imperfect witness. That is part of what makes this story so legible.

She helped build the machine she now describes. She spent years inside it. She became publicly identified with it. She now brings enough baggage to make dismissal easy: ideological reversals, litigation, celebrity-adjacent chaos, and enough personal controversy to redirect attention away from the structure she is describing. All of that makes her easier to caricature. It also fits the system she is describing quite well.

Institutions and movements do not need their defectors to be saints. Messy defectors are often easier to neutralize. The public gets handed a personality story instead of a structural one. The witness becomes the scandal. The method slips quietly back out the side door.

That is another recurring move this newsletter will track. If someone with direct knowledge of a machine is compromised, embarrassing, or politically inconvenient, that embarrassment becomes a deodorizer for the machine itself. The audience gets invited to roll its eyes at the messenger instead of examining the procurement architecture behind the message.

The system does not require perfect liars. It only requires an imperfect whistleblower.

What Gag Ordered is for

So let this first issue double as a statement of purpose.

Gag Ordered is not interested in generic “the media is broken” whining or self-flattering resistance cosplay. There is already enough of that. This newsletter is interested in the mechanics: the contracts, euphemisms, intermediaries, legal shields, policy gaps, message discipline, reputational laundering, procedural theater, and strategic ambiguity that make modern coercion look respectable.

Some issues will be short. Some will be reported essays. Some will decode a single phrase doing a suspicious amount of institutional work. Some will trace how a scandal gets translated into HR language, compliance language, campaign language, or press-release language until the original harm is barely visible. Some will be about politics. Some will be about media. Some will be about workplaces, nonprofits, entertainment, or prestige institutions where public values and private retaliation coexist very comfortably.

The common thread is simple: who is being managed, who is doing the managing, and what vocabulary makes the management sound normal.

That is the project.

Because we live in a moment when political operatives can apparently run creator campaigns that mimic grassroots speech, route money through consultants, write that the content must appear genuine, and still expect the public to treat the whole thing as an organic outbreak of conviction. It is an old trick with better UX.

And because too much contemporary analysis stops at the scandal and never bothers to map the mechanism.

Gag Ordered is for the mechanism.

If that sounds like your kind of reading, subscribe, forward this to someone who still believes coordinated messaging always announces itself, and stick around. There is a lot of “authenticity” to audit.

Sources:

https://www.politico.com/news/2024/12/05/grenell-trump-cabinet-loyalty-00192785

https://www.aol.com/entertainment/elon-musks-ex-describes-exact-171127119.html

Thanks for reading!
